Science-Speccing

sinkingshipWith the new skill system, I experimented with a skill build that’s heavily specialized in the science skill tree (23 points). Did Heidy become a new Science Goddess of Death?

Yes she did. In the sense that she died a lot.

Maybe it’s because I was testing her out in ISA, where hordes of angry Borg can and will make short work of shields. See, a heavily-focused science skill set means (A) Heidy is relying primarily on shields to survive, and (B) she’s making all the local Borg rowdy by throwing around Gravity Wells and TBRs like Mardi Gras beads in N’Awlins. Combat logs (Yeah after 2 years, I finally installed it last night!) said she topped incoming damage on both ISA runs, and nope, she really doesn’t want to be generating that amount of threat when she’s in a flimsy little boat with a ton of shields that mean jack to the Borg.

Looks like it’s back to the drawing board with Heidy as far as skills are concerned. Or perhaps even rethinking the entire premise of having a Science ship as her primary ride. Because if the combat logs are any indication, Heidy’s science build lags behind even Kala’s in terms of DPS, and Kala is definitely not as advanced as Heidy in terms of resources and experience.

  1. Interesting. This means that I’m going to have to use a totally different approach to setting up my sci skills on my sci toon. It appears that with this new skill system, they’ve gone in a direction more favorable to tac toons than eng or sci.

  2. Don’t just take my word for it, because it’s entirely possible that I don’t know what I’m doing and completely messed up the skills. Check the forums or reddits and see what other people have experienced!

    1. Oh, I know. I’m just saying that that seems to be the general consensus from what I’ve been hearing thus far from people in the game. It’s still pretty early, so maybe we’ll figure out a way to optimize the sci side of things better as we try new builds on different sci ships and experiment with them.

One thing I know is that it’ll be tough for my sci toon (Arthur, a sci Fed) with his T6 Intrepid (not the fleet version), with its two tac console slots. I’ll see what I can do with his skills once I get him set up on the new system. So far I’ve only got my main (Jay) set up and squared away on the new system; I haven’t even touched my alts yet. I’ll do that when I have time.

  3. Hey Heidy, what about eng spec’ing? Have you tried it yet? I’m experimenting with eng skills on the new system with my eng toon (AJ), and I’m not entirely sure how to set him up yet. So I was wondering what your thoughts were on that.

      1. No worries, I’ve done a bit of work on my eng toon’s (AJ’s) setup and I think I’ve come up with one that’s pretty well-balanced between tac and eng (with slightly more tac than eng) and just enough sci to keep my shields strong. So far it seems to be working OK, and I’ll adjust it later on if needed.
